Lenora James’ debut album, The Parts I Kept, is a soul record about what remains.

Before there was an album, there was a whole life: singing in church as a girl, years spent working jobs that had nothing to do with music, relationships that taught her both how to love and when to leave, a complicated relationship with faith, the loss of her mother, and the slow realization that she had spent too much of her life postponing herself.

Those experiences became the foundation of the record.

There is grief here, but this is not a grief album. There is independence, but it is not simply an empowerment album. There is romance, regret, faith, loneliness, desire, aging, humor, memory, and the quiet confidence of a woman who finally understands that the years did more than take from her.
